A fantastically interesting visit to the Cononish Gold Mine at Tyndrum, which right now contains up to £200 million worth of gold! Thank you to Scotgold's Chris Sangster and local Cllr Jeremy McDonald for showing me around.
I was taken a kilometre into the mine, where they've already identified several lucrative gold veins. Once the mine starts producing, it will be Britain's first gold mine since the 1980's. Chris was very informative, pointing out the gold seams- to the untrained eye little more than dirty marble!
The mine will create 60 jobs and £500,000 in direct payments for the local community. The project has the support of the national park.
